safety & Responsibility
Safety
While obviously a really cool and rewarding challenge to undertake, we urge you not to underestimate the dangers associated with the long distances and prolonged cold exposure involved.
Wild swimming carries an inherent risk of danger, and we remind you that The13.info takes no responsibility for your actions. Should you decide to attempt this challenge you do so completely at your own risk and should have sufficient land and water based support.

The Lake District is an incredible place, and we want to keep it that way. If you take on The13, be respectful of others and the environment. Don’t be a tool. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

-
Thoroughly rinse all swimming gear between lakes! It is vital for the biosecurity of the lakes that plant and animal species are not transferred lake to lake. Please read more at the Lake District National Park and the Cumbria Freshwater Invasive Non-Native Species Initiative.

-
Ensure that you are up to date with, and follow, all guidelines and rules put in place by local authorities.

-
Do not litter.

-
Do not trespass on private land.
-
Use roads safely and park appropriately.

-
Ensure support kayak permits have been obtained where necessary (these may be required, for example, for Bassenthwaite Lake & Crummockwater).
